Critical Review Of My Learning – Badge 5

After engaging with several social media tools and exploring a range of topics on the impact of social media on our lives during the course of this semester. I’m going to pick apart the lessons I’ve learned from the various challenges I’ve completed and how I will incorporate these skills into my academic studies or into my daily life.

One of the first tasks given to me was to create my own “WordPress” blog. For each Badge, I had to document a two-hundred worded summary and analysis of the learning I’d acquired by completing the exercises associated with the given badge. I found this to be an exciting yet difficult task as this steps outside the norm of my undergraduate degree, being an engineer. Social media has a big impact on daily life, so by using” WordPress” this allowed me to participate and engage in something that felt very current to me. Blogging has been shown to offer tremendous benefits including creativity, better communication, skills and boosted confidence (Thompson,2018). I felt that my general grasp and application of the course material improved as I was required to write all that I learned in my own words. The use of this creative writing exercise improved my creative thinking, vocabulary and my persuasion/communication skills which are core skills that are essential to the modern day workplace. The skills you gain from writing, analyzing other writer’s work and interacting with your fellow students can be invaluable in helping you advance in your career (Anglesey,2013).

The importance of social media for marketing and customer service strategies has increased over the last decade. Social media has made it easier to keep up with social engagement with fast paced feedback, allow businesses to improve their customer relationships/evolve in general. Social Media tools allow businesses to aggregate all messages sent to all your profiles and networks into one spot and provides a team collaboration environment. Management tools allow you to analyze your posting strategy, time your content accordingly and to analyze Social Performance. Throughout college, I’ve communicated with fellow students about college work through apps such as “Facebook” and “Whatsapp”, which I believe has had a positive effect on my academic performance. In our society, social media platforms can be used to assist learning and sharing knowledge ” students of 21st century cannot study without the use of social media which serves as a platform for information sharing a knowledge production”(Chugh,R).The tasks I underwent to improve my knowledge in this field were to create a “Map Mashup” and to create both a “Pinterest” and “Pocket” account. Overlaying data is an essential skill in managing and manipulating data online. Managing data is a vital skill I will incorporate into work-life as it reduces the potential for errors. With clean data, clear policies and processes, a business owner can deal in reality, and access granular bits of that reality to fulfill its mission. (Oz du Soleil,2013). Pocket is an app essential for writers as it’s an app by saves/organizes articles in one place. Pinterest is a clever site used by many startup companies to broadcast products to a large demographic. Although I can see the benefits of these apps, I don’t think they’ll feature heavily in my future as I don’t seek out a carrier in writing or in advertising/business in which familiarity of these apps would be pivotal.

Focus was then changed to assessing how social media tools help visualise information for yourself and for others. One of our tasks for this concept was to use “Piktochart” which is a media tool used to make various types of infographics. This tool is widely used in the graphic design industry. I learned/engaged with key concepts in creating a match-day program whilst also discovering that this could be a great tool to personalise my C.V. for future job applications. Visual communication allows us to deliver information more directly, grab more attention/evoke a greater response off the audience or to increase the credibility of your message. Visual communication is truly a powerful tool you can use when you are trying to make a point! (Nishadha,2018). Next we used “Screencastomatic” to create an educational video and I uploaded it then to “YouTube”. This video gave the viewer an interactive visual tutorial of how to look up something on google images. Social media when used correctly can be an excellent tool for one to further educate themselves. I found an excellent article online on using “YouTube” as a teaching and learning tool. The results of this article concluded that a large amount of students rely heavily on “YouTube” to solve problems or get a greater understanding and that teaching and educational methods should be adapted to coincide with the fast evolving world. Using visual objects, especially videos to explain something will make it easier for students to visualize and actually understand the topic.. (Moghavvemi, S., Sulaiman, A., Jaafar, N. I., & Kasem, N. (2018). I’ll continue to use YouTube to aid my academic learning as I find it the most effective education tool to engage all your senses i.e. auditory visual and your cognitive thought.

The concluding lesson that was given to us was how we can develop and track our digital footprint. Digital reach refers to the number of users who have come across or can come across a particular content on a social platform such as Facebook or LinkedIn. There are mixed reports out there on whether you can control your digital reach or not with many people believing that our phones are listening to us. The main benefit I drew from this task was learning how to track my own digital footprint. One of the challenges I completed was to draft an updated privacy policy for a social media platform of my choice. This quickly led me to realize the dangers I was exposed to and everything I could be liable for. We were asked to create a LinkedIn profile, which I intended to do soon anyway as I’m applying for internships. My LinkedIn will play a huge part in my professional career, both in making business connections and also by portraying myself in the most professional way possible. For this final task I learned how pivotal it is to market yourself and how to give the best possible impression of yourself at all times otherwise you “can inadvertently give others an all-too accurate” description of yourself (Keogh,2018). This could cause you to be misrepresented by something you posted years ago.

Is it possible to control your digital reach? How can social media tools facilitate your efforts in managing your digital footprint?

Digital reach is a media analytic metric that refers to the number of users who have come across or could come across a particular content on a social platform such as Facebook or LinkedIn. This begs the question! Can we choose what Ads we are exposed to or could possibly be exposed to on social media. I personally don’t think we’re in control! There are two theories discussed by Sophie Bridge regarding why we see tailored ads on social media platforms. The first being about “the emergence of virtual assistants” like Alexa, Siri and Google Home. Do our phones listen to our conversations? Do we give them too much information about us? Facebook in recent news have been brought to court on the accusation they’re exploiting their users by “spying” and releasing information for advertisements. The second theory being that of highly intrinsic algorithms i.e. “how many people are talking about it” or “Breaking news item”. or by clicking “yes” to cookies(S.Bridge,2017).

We live in a world today where everyone is connected and interlinked by the use of social media sites. Unfortunately, most people sign up to these sites without knowing what permission they’ve granted to use. Through my learning this week I’ve discovered what default privacy settings entail and how I can reduce my personal data that can be leaked out. It is vitally important that people are aware of what they are putting up for people to see. Before you post just think! Could this have any future consequences or would I like this to be said about me! There has been studies/cases that your digital footprint can hamper your employability … “can inadvertently give others an all-too accurate” description of yourself (Keogh,2018). This could cause you to be misjudge by the posting of something years ago or by posting something that could be viewed as insensitive to others.

In conclusion to this weeks blog, although social media brings many benefits to our modern day life, we should be mindful of the negatives such as lack of privacy or the bombardment of Ads!

Digital Badge 3 – How can social media tools help you visualise information for yourself and others?

“A Picture is worth ten thousand words”

Fred R. Barnard

Social Media has exploded with its growth over the last 10 years and with that so to has its ability to be able to convey information and messages quickly. People are becoming more tech-savvy and using social media platforms to design websites, convey ideas or improve job Cvs. For task 3, we were asked to familiarise ourselves with “Screencast-o-matic”, “Youtube” and “Piktochart”.

Screencast-o-matic is a presentation recording tool for mac or pc. It allows the user to video record all of the actions on their computer as well as audio commentary and save the recording for sharing or future playback.(Tomaszewski,J).This is great for showing visual step by step guides with explanations and makes a faster pace for learning. This can be seen in the video I’ve attached below. Youtube in recent years, have allowed educators to post lecture videos, example solutions or simple explanations for their students to access. This provides students with the environment of that as a one on one tutoring.(TeachThoughtStaff). Piktochart is a simple and free to use website for creating infographics, presentations and posters as well as the more formal requirements of reports.(Ellis-Barrett,L). It has a variety of templates which you can choose from. Piktochart is used world-wide for many purposes whether that would be creating a visually appealing brochure or Cv for a job interview.

Badge 2 – How can social media tools help us use and manage information we find?

As social media has grown vastly over the decade so too has the importance of social media for marketing and customer service strategies. Now more than ever, people are taking to Google to find the best “social media management tools” to help them keep up. For Badge 2 , we were asked to explore “Pinterest” and “Pocket” and familiarise ourselves with how to find and manage information on these sites

Pinterest is a new up and coming social media site which boasts over 7 million participants! It allows its users to post images and link the image back to their website, it also gives its users the ability to share content found by “repinning”, liking or commenting. This clever site is being used by many startup companies or businesses to present their ideas or products to a large demographic.( Falls, J.) Pocket on the other hand is an app that saves articles for offline reading. Pocket is essential for bloggers for many reasons, its a place to store information for posts or to organise reference articles or posts in the same spot.(Harsh Agrawal). The final task we were asked to perform was to create a map mashup. Overlaying data is an essential skill in managing and manipulating data online. We combined different data to highlight information.

The popularity of tools needed to manage those social media pages. In fact, now more than ever, people are taking to Google to find the best “social media management tools” to help them keep up.

Review Badge 1: How can publishing through blogs assist me now in my academic studies?

I believe the use of blogs helps reinforce the material covered in both the lectures and tutorial sessions while also offering the student the opportunity to express their own opinion and creativity by posting through this blog. Social media dominates our everyday life it is the fastest form of communication on the planet and it is most effective platform to express an idea or opinion. Using WordPress is both a clever and intriguing way of getting students to engage and put their own stamp on the lessons learned.

I thoroughly enjoyed making my own blog and to respond and use the materials covered online on Brightspace. The fast-paced nature of the online lectures and tutorials are something I enjoy in comparison to the outdated sitting at the back of a lecture hall. Blogs can be used to improve student writing, especially for developing skill in analysis and critique.(Macie Hall, 2013).

A study was conducted on “using blogging as a learning tool” in which it highlighted that college students were blogging to enhance their critical skills and that lecturers and tutors need to come up with new technology and fun ways of keeping students more engaged in the classroom. Through blogging, we can ensure that our students are communicating with each other, expressing themselves, exercising their writing, reading, and critical thinking skills, and reflecting on the information that you taught them earlier in the day. (Brzeski, Toni Ann, 2014).
